Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Athenas Soccer Wins SCIAC Opener Over Whittier 2-0

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sierra Troy scored her first career goal with 42 seconds left in the first half and Flora Glantz added an insurance goal in the second half as the No. 16 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Whittier in its SCIAC opener on Wednesday night at Pritzlaff Field.

Sadie Brown had eight saves to get her third shutout of the season for the Athenas. With the win, CMS improves to 6-0-1 overall on the season and starts off league play 1-0, while Whittier suffers its first loss of the year and slips to 3-1 overall.

Troy subbed into the game in the 35th minute and then put the Athenas ahead just before the break. Robyn Dizon set it up by winning a 50-50 ball and cutting between two Whittier defenders. She then rolled a crossing pass to Troy 12 yards from goal, who settled it and then slotted a low shot perfectly inside the left post to put CMS in front heading into the break.

Brown had four saves in the first half, including three in a span of a minute, starting with stopping a breakaway from Whittier's Lauren Young.

Glantz then added an insurance goal in a scramble in the goalmouth. Riley Zitar took a corner kick that was headed forward from inside the six-yard box by Echo Malinowski-Cunningham. Glantz then got to the loose ball just in front of the goal line and flicked it in to put the Athenas ahead 2-0.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Cal Lutheran for a 7 p.m. contest.
