REDLANDS, Calif. -
Max Pemberton broke a 12-12 tie with a solo homer to start the ninth, and then added an RBI double to cap it off, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team scored seven runs to take a 19-12 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday, earning a split.
Redlands won the opening game of the doubleheader 5-4, but the Stags ended up winning the series after taking a 12-4 win in the first game on Friday. With the split, CMS now stands at 16-5 on the season and 6-3 in the SCIAC, while Redlands moves to 11-13 overall and 5-4 in the SCIAC with the loss.
Pemberton finished the nightcap 3-for-6 with four RBI, while
Rider Gordon was 2-for-5 with six RBI and
Bryce Didrickson was 2-for-3 with three walks, four runs scored and two RBI.
Josh Jacobs hit a two-run homer to put CMS ahead 12-8 in the seventh, but the Bulldogs tied it with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 12-12 heading into the ninth. Pemberton then fouled off four straight two-strike pitches, before belting a solo home run to put CMS ahead 13-12.
The Stags kept it going, as Didrickson just missed a grand slam by a matter of feet, settling for a two-run double off the wall to push the lead to 15-12. Gordon then had a sacrifice fly for his sixth RBI of the game, and
Dillon Martin had a two-run double to make the score 18-12. Pemberton then added an RBI double to his homer in the ninth to cap off the scoring.
Gordon gave CMS a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run double, and Pemberton doubled in another run to make it 3-0.
Slader Spoor then hit a homer in the second to make it 4-0 Stags, before Redlands came back to tie it 4-4. Gordon then played two more runners with an RBI single in the fifth to put CMS ahead 6-4.
Redlands went ahead 8-6, before a six-run seventh put the Stags up 12-8. Gordon had an RBI groundout, Martin tied it with an RBI double, and Jacobs capped it off with a two-run shot.
In the opening game,
Carter Bennett was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, including a solo homer to lead off the ninth and cut the lead to 5-4, but Aziz Bishop got the final three outs for Redlands to pick up the save.
Blaise Heher hit a solo homer, and
Jett Shue had a pair of RBI.
CMS will be back in action next weekend for a three-game series with La Verne.
