CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Hannah Adams threw a four-hit shutout in the opener, and the Athenas earned the tying run in the bottom of the sixth before darkness hit as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team opened with a 2-0 win and a 4-4 tie against McMurry in its season opening doubleheader on Friday at Athena Field.
In the first game, CMS got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single from
Mrdah Murali, which scored pinch-runner
Hina Usuda.
Alex Wedemeyer doubled the lead in the fifth with a clutch two-out RBI triple, which plated
Imani Ferris.
Adams, meanwhile, retired the first 13 batters in order before giving up a single with one out in the fifth.
Rachel Sapirstein made a key play defensively in that stretch with a leaping grab of a chopper, while
Giselle Lai made a sliding play up the middle on a grounder at second base.
McMurry had its best chance in the sixth with two singles to put two runners on and two out. Shortstop
Danica Stirling went the short way in the hole for a forceout at third for the second out, and Adams got the final out on a comebacker. Adams then finished out the shutout with a strikeout, her fifth of the game.
CMS was in danger of getting a split as it trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth with darkness looming.
Averi O, though, hit a big one-out double, and Sapirstein followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Down to their final out, Stirling lined a ball at second base that the War Hawks weren't able to squeeze, and
Ana Federico came home with the tying run.
Imani Ferris had an RBI single to give CMS a 2-1 lead in the second inning and later scored on a past ball to make it 3-1. Wedemeyer had an RBI single in the first inning to score Lai, finishing the game 2-for-3 and the doubleheader 3-for-6.
CMS will be back in action next weekend for a three-game series with Pomona-Pitzer, playing a Friday game at Pomona-Pitzer and then hosting a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 noon.
