Mukhar, Yates Help CMS Women's Soccer to SCIAC Win over Caltech

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Junior defender Maria Mukhar scored from 40 yards out for the first goal of her career to open the scoring and added two assists to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team to a 7-0 win over Caltech on Wednesday evening at Nakasone Field.

Jordan Yates scored twice for CMS, which improves to 7-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the SCIAC as it opens the second half of league play with a win.

The Athenas had a corner kick just under 15 minutes into the game, and the ball was cleared out of the penalty area back towards midfield after a punch from goalkeeper Kassie Kristufek. Mukhar settled the ball 40 yards from goal, and then sent a blast back towards the net with Kristufek off her line, and it tucked under the crossbar and in to put CMS ahead 1-0 at the 15:14 mark.

Just over seven minutes later, Mukhar took a corner kick from the left side and sent a bending ball inside the six-yard box. After the ball fell into a crowd, Jordan Yates was able to get her foot on in and slip it inside the near post to make it 2-0.

The Athenas stretched it to 3-0 just 2:28 later, when Ava Allen dribbled down the right sideline and sent a cross into the middle, where Sena Howell was able to one-touch it into the net from inside the six-yard box. Lexie Roth added a goal just 2:25 before the half, when Meghan Bartsch got to a clearance and played a short pass to her left, where Roth was able to tuck it under the crossbar.

CMS opened the second half quickly, scoring less than two minutes in as Carmel Randolph finished off a cross from Kateri Trujillo. Roth was the first to the cross, and was able to half-volley it back to Randolph, who finished with a one-timer to make it 5-0 just 1:39 into the second stanza. Mukhar then picked up her second assist on a Trujillo goal with 22:30 remaining.

Yates capped off the scoring with six seconds left when she finished in the goalmouth off a cross from Sierra Troy. Shannon Bennitt made the start in goal for CMS and had two saves, before giving way to Claire Patterson with 25 minutes left.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Occidental for a key SCIAC contest at 11 a.m.
