ORANGE, Calif. -
Will Householter had 25 points but the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team came up one point short in a 72-71 loss at Chapman on Saturday, just its second defeat of the season.
With the loss, CMS now stands at 18-2 overall and 9-2 in the SCIAC, remaining in a tie for first place in league play after Redlands also lost at Cal Lutheran. Chapman improves to 12-8 overall and 6-5 in the SCIAC, with home wins over both CMS and Redlands to its credit.
CMS led 38-34 at the half, and built it to as many as seven in the second half, before Chapman came back to take the lead at 60-59 with 8:30 left.
Cahal Connolly started a 6-0 run with a dunk, which was followed by a three-point play by
Reid Jones and a lay-up from
Joey Kennedy to put CMS ahead 65-60 with 5:24 to go.
The Panthers, though, answered with an 8-0 run to go back in front 68-65. Householter hit two foul shots to cut it to 68-67 with 2:15 to go, but Chapman hit four straight foul shots in the last minute to turn a 68-68 tie into a 72-68 lead. Householter's three-pointer at the buzzer left CMS one point short.
Jones and Kennedy each had 16 points for the Stags, with Kennedy adding 10 rebounds for a double-double. Jones added eight rebounds and four steals.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Cal Lutheran for a 7 p.m. contest.
