OSHKOSK, Wis. - The 14th-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team had a thrilling match against No. 5 Emory on the first day of the Marty Petersen Invitational at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, with the final three sets all going to extra points, but the Athenas ended up on the short end of a 3-2 defeat on Friday afternoon.
Set scores were 25-19, 20-25, 29-27, 24-26, 19-17 in favor of the Eagles, who improve to 4-0 with the win, while the Athenas slip to 3-1 with the loss.
Brooke McKee had 16 kills and 17 digs for the Athenas, while
Mia Urosevic had a career-high 28 digs, as well as eight assists.
CMS fought off three match points in the fifth set, with
Ari Clarkson recording a kill to tie the score 14-14, before adding a second straight kill to put the Athenas ahead 15-14. Emory responded with the next two points, before
Shae Delany had a kill to tie the score 16-16. After the Eagles went ahead 17-16, Clarkson came through with another big kill to tie it 17-17, but Emory took the final two points to win the match.
CMS needed to win the fourth to extend the match to five, and McKee had a kill to put the Athenas ahead 24-23. Emory fought off a set point, but Clarkson was able to put CMS ahead 25-24, before Delany wrapped up the set with a kill to send the match to a fifth.
Clarkson finished with eight kills in 19 attempts for the Athenas, while
Solvej Eversoll had eight blocks. Delany and
Phoebe Shorney each reached double figures in kills.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it faces WashU and host Wisconsin-Oshkosh on the second day of the Mary Petersen Invitational.
