PASADENA, Calif. - One day after a long five-set win over Cal Lutheran in its conference opener, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team earned a quicker 25-15, 25-13, 25-22 win over Caltech on Saturday at Braun Gymnasium.
With the win, CMS moves to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC, while Caltech slips to 3-10 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Brooke McKee had a big day offensively for CMS with 15 kills in 23 attempts, hitting .609.
Stella Gajar added 10 blocks (four solo) and seven kills in 11 attempts with no errors for a .636 hitting percentage, and
Shae Delany had 10 kills in 23 attempts to go along with 12 digs for a double-double.
Mia Urosevic had 17 digs to lead the Athenas, while
Hayden Lin (15) and
Samantha Riter (12) combined for 27 assists.
CMS had to earn the sweep, as Caltech hung tough in the third set, going ahead 17-16 on a kill from Aliza Bakker. CMS answered, though, with a 4-0 run, which started with a Delany kill, and then was followed with two straight Delany aces before McKee gave CMS a 20-17 win on a kill.
After an
Ari Clarkson kill put CMS ahead 23-19, the Beavers battled back to within 23-22, but Gajar and Delany combined on a key block to give the Athenas match point. Delany then capped off the match with a kill to give CMS the 3-0 win.
The Athenas will be back in action on Tuesday when they play host to undefeated and No. 1 ranked La Verne at 7 p.m.
