CMS Volleyball Takes Four-Setter Over UC Santa Cruz

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team dropped the first set 25-23, but then kicked into another gear to win the final three sets 25-14, 25-14, 25-19 as it earned a 3-1 win over UC Santa Cruz on the second day of the Cal Lutheran Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Brooke McKee had 15 kills and Phoebe Shorney added 10, as the Athenas finish the tournament 3-0 to move to 6-3 overall on the season. UC Santa Cruz falls to 6-4 on the year with the loss.

Shae Delany led the CMS defense with 16 digs, while Mia Urosevic added 10, and Samantha Riter paced the offensive with 22 assists. McKee had 15 kills on 30 attempts with only two errors, hitting .433 on the day, while Solvej Eversoll had seven kills in 13 attempts with no errors, hitting .538, to go with a team-high four blocks.

An ace by Delany gave CMS a 22-18 lead in the first set, before the Banana Slugs got the next five points to take a one-point lead. After the Athenas tied it, UC Santa Cruz earned the next two points for a 25-23 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.

CMS responded to the challenge with a 6-0 run in the second set to open up a 13-6 lead, capped off by two Hayden Lin aces around a McKee kill. An Anna Ryan kill pushed the lead to 17-8, and McKee finished off the set with a kill for a 25-14 win to level the match at 1-1.

The third set saw Eversoll get two kills in a 4-0 run that put CMS ahead 10-3. Stella Gajar and McKee had two straight kills to open up a 10-point lead at 17-7, and Ryan and Gajar capped off the set with a block for another 25-14 win.

The fourth set stayed tight, until a 3-0 mini-run gave the Athenas a 20-15 lead. Shorney had a kill to set up match point, and a Banana Slug error gave CMS the 25-19 win and the 3-1 victory.

CMS will be back in action in two weeks when it opens up SCIAC play with a home match against Cal Lutheran on Friday, Sept. 26.
