CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team won all 34 draw controls, including 30 from
Julia Ryan, to tie an NCAA Division III single game record, as the Athenas took a 28-5 win over Whittier on Wednesday evening in its final regular season home game.
With the win, the Athenas improve to 10-6 on the season and 9-2 in the SCIAC, while Whittier falls to 0-13 overall and 0-11 in league play.
Coming into this year, the record for draw controls in a game was 33, set by FDU-Florham against Drew in 2022. Emerson surpassed that with 34 in a game against Wellesley earlier this month (April 5). CMS has come close to the mark several times this year, with 32 against Occidental, 30 against George Fox and 29 against Colorado College earlier this season.
Three goals in the Whittier contest did not result in ensuing draw controls, due to the running clock seeing the period end before the restarts in the second, third and fourth quarters.
Ryan's 30 draws now gives her 292 in 15 games, an average of 19.5 per game, seven more than the student-athlete in second place in Division III (Clare Connolly of Babson with 12.6) and almost five more than the current NCAA Division III record of 14.94, set by Kelly McGinniss of Lycoming in 2019.
Ryan added two goals, one of 11 Athenas with a multiple-goal game, led by four from
Amelia Ulmer.
Maggie Griffis and
Kate Larson each had three goals and an assist, while
Grace Minturn,
Taylor Daetz,
Natalie Teare,
Paige Morgan,
Kaia Scott,
Sarah Press and
Hannah Conte each added two.
Ava Goldson had a team-high four assists, while Minturn and Daetz each had two.
CMS will conclude the regular season tomorrow with a road game at Redlands, which will serve as a battle for the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Tournament and home field advantage in the semifinal next week. The Athenas won the first meeting 12-11, and Redlands can pull even in the standings and win the tiebreaker if it wins by two goals or more.
