REDLANDS, Calif. - The tenth-ranked Redlands softball team used a four-run sixth to overcome a 4-1 deficit and take the first game of a doubleheader over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5-4 on Saturday.
Redlands went on to take the nightcap 4-1 and improve to 27-7 overall on the season, including 12-3 in the SCIAC, while CMS slips to 15-10 overall and 6-6 in league play.
Averi O hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the opener to put the Athenas ahead 2-1. After Redlands got one back,
Mrdah Murali had an RBI single in the third to make it 3-1.
Danica Stirling tacked on an RBI single with two outs in the fifth to make it 4-1, but the Bulldogs were able to win it in the sixth on two-out RBI singles from Paige Messenlehner to tie it 4-4 and Brooklyn Bard to go ahead 5-4.
In the nightcap,
Madison Gonzalez had an RBI double in the sixth to get CMS within 3-1, but Redlands was able to answer back with a Messenlehner RBI double in the bottom half and take the 4-1 win. Murali,
Emma Suh and
Giselle Lai were each 2-for-4 in the opener for CMS.
Suh added a 3-for-4 performance in the nightcap, continuing her torrid hitting that has seen her hit 14-for-19 in her last five games, while earning the SCIAC Hitter of the Week on Monday.
CMS will be back in action this weekend for a three-game series with Whittier, including a road game on Friday and a home doubleheader on Saturday.
