Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

CMS Women's Lacrosse Falls in Overtime to No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Chloe Denhart scored on a free position shot 40 seconds into overtime to give the No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer women's lacrosse team a 12-11 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scrippps on Wednesday evening at Merritt Field.

With the win, the Sagehens move to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the SCIAC, while the Athenas fall to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the SCIAC, with all three losses coming to nationally ranked teams (along with Chicago and Colorado College).

CMS won the opening draw control of overtime, but Pomona-Pitzer was able to force a turnover and made an end-to-end rush. Holly Shankle came up with a big save, her 14th of the game, on Denhart who broke in 1-on-1, but the Athenas were called for a foul from behind, resulting in a free position attempt. Denhart was able to convert on the second try to give the Sagehens the 12-11 overtime win, the exact same score as last year's overtime game at Pomona-Pitzer.

Kaia Scott had three goals, one assist, three caused turnovers and four ground balls, and Grace Minturn added three goals, an assist and four ground balls for the Athenas.

The game was tight throughout, as CMS had the only two-goal lead of the entire game at 4-2, which came early in the second quarter, before the Sagehens scored the next two to tie it.

CMS didn't trail in the contest until Pomona-Pitzer scored in the closing seconds of the third quarter to take a 9-8 lead. Holly Shankle came up with a big save early in the fourth to prevent the Sagehens from going up by two, and Summer Matsik tied it up with 10:49 left on a feed from Ava Goldson.

After Pomona-Pitzer scored on a free position shot, Shankle again kept it a one-goal game with her 11th save and Matsik again tied it at 10-10 with 4:44 left. Minturn broke the tie when she made a cut across the front of the goal, and had the pass deflected by a Pomona-Pitzer defender. She stayed with the play, though, and picked up the loose ball off a bounce and fired it home with 3:30 left.

Shankle came up with two big saves to preserve the 11-10 lead before the Athenas turned it over at the end of the shot clock, and River Buechner was able to knot it up with 18.5 seconds left. A year ago, Pomona-Pitzer tied it with just eight seconds left in regulation before winning in overtime.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Whittier for an 11 a.m. contest.
