Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Athenas Basketball Comes Up Short in Comeback Effort against Hamline

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team cut a 12-point third-quarter lead down to one, and a 10-point fourth quarter lead down to two, but couldn't come all the way back as it suffered a 67-63 defeat to Hamline on Sunday at Roberts Pavilion.

Haylie Wang had 21 points and Renee Chong added 18 for the Athenas, who see their seven-game win streak snapped as they fall to 8-2 on the season, while Hamline improves its record to 6-3.

Both teams started slow in the first game back after a long break for exams and the holidays, but Hamline was the first to heat up as it turned an 11-10 deficit after the first quarter into a 31-22 lead at halftime.

The Pipers extended the lead up to 12 in the third quarter, but CMS came all the way back to close to 40-39 on a Wang lay-up with 5:09 left in the third. Hamline was able to extend the lead back up to 49-43 after three, and after a Wang jumper, used two quick three-pointers to pull ahead 55-45 early in the fourth.

Chong hit a three-pointer to close the gap to 58-54 with 2:38 left, and then assisted Laura Strenk on a three-pointer with 1:35 to go to get CMS within 62-59. A Wang driving jumper in the paint with 15 seconds left brought CMS within just two at 65-63, but Sophie Stork got her own rebound in a scramble off a missed free throw, with the possession arrow favoring the Pipers, and Camille Cummings made it a two-possession game with 8.5 seconds left to seal it.

Strenk had nine points on 3-4 shooting from three-point territory and added a team-high four assists, while Chong had five steals to pace the defense and Caleigh Edwards finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.

CMS will be back in action on New Year's Eve for a road game at Caltech, before returning home to face the Beavers a second time on Saturday, Jan. 3.
